Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area Open House on Accomplishments and Future Priorities
The Portland Development Commission (PDC) is inviting members of the public to attend one of two open houses on the progress of the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area. These events will provide opportunities for community members to review the urban renewal area accomplishments and provide input on future projects, priorities and programs.
- Open house #1: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, 4134 N. Vancouver Ave.
- Open house #2: Thursday, September 25, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N. Brandon St.
The public comments will be used by the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Advisory Committee to make recommendations to PDC on future housing, redevelopment, economic development, community livability, transportation and parks projects.
The Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area (ICURA) was created in 2000 and consists of 3,769 acres, making it Portland’s largest urban renewal area. It includes a diverse collection of historic communities in north and northeast Portland, comprised of older residential neighborhoods, interconnected by commercial corridors, with large scale industrial centers, and served by Interstate MAX.
The goals of ICURA include:
- Encouraging mixed-use development along the light rail corridor and station areas;
- Creating new jobs;
- Developing new housing that strikes a balance between homeownership, rental, and addresses displacement of existing residents;
- Improving streetscapes to complement light rail use, encouraging the use of alternative modes of travel, maintain and improve access to employment centers, creating a pedestrian-friendly environment; and
- Promoting community livability through strategic improvements to parks, open space, trails, historic and cultural resources, and community facilities.
