Third Open House Planned For Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Gateway and Heritage Markers Project
The Portland Development Commission is inviting community members to review and comment on the concept master plan for a “Gateway” into the Northeast Portland neighborhoods located at NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and NE Grand Ave. The plan will also include a series of heritage makers along NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. between the gateway and NE Rosa Parks Way.
The open house will take place Wednesday, May 28, 2008 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Irvington Village located at 420 NE Mason and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Refreshments will be provided.
The concept master plan was developed in collaboration with members of the Northeast Community. A stakeholder advisory committee has been meeting since October 2007 to provide guidance to PDC staff and the design team. In addition, public events were held in January and March 2008 to obtain input and comment from community members.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Gateway and Historic Markers Project aims to fulfill the goals of the Albina Community Plan, and other community plans, that call for the identification of a gateway at NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and NE Grand Ave between NE Schuyler and Hancock streets. The plan also suggests that a gateway should enhance the pedestrian environment, incorporate multicultural public art, and announce the entrance to an historic area of Portland. The proposed heritage markers may honor individuals, cultural or historical events, or topics of significance to Portland’s inner northeast neighborhoods. PDC is in the process of securing funding for the construction phase of the project.
