Spiffin’ Up Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
Saturday, April 19, 2008

Second Annual Spiffin’ Up Martin Luther King Boulevard Event Scheduled For April 19
Volunteers to Help with Community Effort

WHAT:

The North / Northeast Business Association (NNEBA), with the support of sponsors, organizations and businesses located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., is hosting the second annual ‘Spiffin’ Up Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. event, Saturday, April 19, 2008. More than 400 neighborhood businesses, community members, and citywide friends will pick up trash, clean graffiti, and remove street debris along three miles of the Boulevard, from NE Broadway to NE Lombard.

“Spiffin’ Up MLK exemplifies the essence of Dr. King’s vision for community respect,” says NNEBA Board President Joice Taylor. “It is a pleasure to be providing a public demonstration of the pride felt for this boulevard considered by many to be the “soul” of Portland.”

At the inaugural Spiffin’ event in 2007 volunteers removed more than a quarter ton of trash and debris. Graffiti was removed from 34 buildings, poles, posts and benches. A total of 300 volunteers provided nearly 1500 volunteer hours and eight local businesses sponsored clean-up teams. Twenty-two local businesses contributed more than $14,000 in in-kind and cash donations to make the clean up possible.

WHEN: Saturday, April 19 from 9:00 a.m. to noon followed by a free lunch for volunteers at Friends of Trees lot (3117 NE MLK Blvd.)
WHERE: All volunteers will assemble at Friends of Trees (3117 NE MLK Blvd.). Registration begins at 8am (coffee, tea, water, and pastries provided) followed by instructions and dispersal by 9am to various work areas along MLK Blvd. Free TriMet transportation is provided along the clean-up route for volunteers. Parking is available along nearby streets and at Cascadia Garlington Center (3034 NE MLK Blvd.).
WHO: The event is sponsored by The North / Northeast Business Association with the support of Portland Development Commission, SOLV, Friends of Trees, NE Coalition of Neighborhoods, Portland Trail Blazers, Radio Disney, Safeway, Salvation Army, Albina Community Bank, Malaya Signs, Office of Neighborhood Involvement Graffiti Abatement Program, Glaceau Water, and dozens of local businesses along and adjacent to MLK Blvd.
WHY: Those who live, work, and do business on and nearby NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. recognize the need for the entire community to care for the ‘soul’ of the neighborhood. This event will bring together the diverse community of inner North and Northeast Portland to take pride in the boulevard that is the center of the community, to celebrate Earth Day 2008, and to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
