Community Livability Grants Available For Projects in Interstate URA

The Portland Development Commission (PDC) announces that funds are now available for community livability projects in the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area (ICURA). The Community Livability Grant Program awards grants for capital improvements for community facilities or historic/cultural preservation projects. The program invests in facilities and other assets in ICURA neighborhoods that can increase livability for residents and that make these Portland neighborhoods unique.

Up to $300,000 in Community Livability Funds will be awarded in fiscal year July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009. Projects must be sponsored by a neighborhood association, business association or public or non-profit tax exempt entity.

PDC awarded a total of $350,000 in ICURA Community Livability Grants over the past two years. Past projects receiving awards include:
· Expansion of a community center using recycled and renewable building principles
· Upgrading heating and cooling systems in an historic building housing an affordable childcare center
· Constructing a reclaimed hardwood floor over a community multi-purpose room’s existing concrete floor
· Acoustic upgrades in an historic community meeting facility
· New trees and benches for a neighborhood school playground

Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one or more informational drop-in sessions to get answers to questions regarding project eligibility, the application form and selection process. Drop-in sessions will be held Tuesday, March 18 at the Lorenzen Conference Center at Legacy Emanuel Campus, 2801 N. Gantenbein Avenue, (enter through main hospital or from N. Graham Street) at the following times: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; or 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

Proposals are due to PDC Monday, April 28 by 5:00 p.m. Proposals will be reviewed by the ICURA Community Livability Committee which will make recommendations back to PDC. Decisions will be announced on Monday, June 30. Projects can begin as soon as the grantees have entered into a Letter of Agreement with PDC.

The complete announcement about the grant program and a downloadable application is available at: www.pdc.us/communitylivability, or by contacting Susan Kuhn via e-mail, or 503-823-3406.
