PDC Begins Work On NE Portland Gateway Project
The Portland Development Commission is inviting community members to help create a master plan for the redevelopment of the northeast Portland neighborhood gateway site at NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and NE Grand Ave. The plan will also include a series of heritage makers along NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. between the gateway and NE Rosa Parks Way.
The first in a series of open houses will take place Tuesday, Jan. 22 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, 4134 N. Vancouver Ave. Participants will be able to view and comment on a series of concept ideas for the project. A formal presentation by the design team and PDC staff will take place at 6:30 p.m.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Gateway and Historic Markers Project aims to fulfill the goals of the Albina Community Plan, and other community plans, that call for the identification of a gateway commemorating Dr. King at NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and NE Grand Ave between NE Schuyler St. and NE Hancock St. The plan also suggests that a gateway should enhance the pedestrian environment, incorporate multicultural public art, and announce the entrance to an historic area of Portland. The proposed heritage markers may honor individuals, cultural or historical events, or topics of significance to Portland’s inner northeast neighborhoods. This series of markers will link the corridor and help enhance its identity.
