New Business Welcome Kit Launched
City Bureaus Join with PDC to Serve Portland Business Owners
The Portland Development Commission (PDC) and the Revenue Bureau of the City Office of Management and Finance have teamed with Mayor Tom Potter’s office and several other city agencies to create a New Business Welcome Kit. This initiative stems from the mayor’s 2005 business summit that is designed to improve customer service and help businesses access the wealth of resources available from the city. The kit was mailed in late December to nearly 1,000 new business license holders.
“I’m delighted to see our city agencies and offices work together to serve our customers. This is an important step in making Portland work better for the business community,” said Mayor Potter.
Business owners attending the mayor’s June 2005 business summit advocated strongly for the development of the Welcome Kit. A number of city offices have been working collaboratively since then to establish the Kit as a pilot program, coordinate bureau cooperation, determine contents and distribution and gather appropriate information from a broad variety of city sources.
Contributing city offices and bureaus include the Office of the Mayor, Revenue Bureau, Bureau of Development Services, Office of Neighborhood Involvement, Bureau of Purchasing, Portland Fire and Rescue Prevention Division, Office of Sustainable Development, and Portland Development Commission. Service information ranges from fire safety to graffiti prevention and removal to how to do business with the city. Subsequent kits will also include information from Multnomah County Assessment and Taxation Section.
The Kit will be mailed every three months through December 2007 to all new city business licensees. Additional plans call for incorporating the Kit information into the Portland Online website to make it available to a broader audience.
PDC was created by Portland voters in 1958 to serve as the city’s urban renewal agency as laid out in Chapter 15 of the City’s Charter. PDC provides comprehensive housing, development and economic development programs within the Portland region.
