Opportunities in the Construction Trades
If you are interested in working in the construction trades, it is important that you contact a trade organization or union to learn more about apprenticeship training programs and requirements for participation.
Information on the construc-tion trades, and the current status of apprenticeship programs when openings are available, is maintained on the Bureau of Labor & Industry's (BOLI) website. Visit BOLI's website to learn more about opportunities through the unions and other organizations that represent the skilled trades listed below.
You can listen to a recorded message with updated information on openings in the Portland area, by contacting BOLI's Apprenticeship and Training Division at 503-731-4200, ext. 3, then dial 5001.
For individuals considering work in the trades, PDCs Workforce Training and Hiring Program requires training on PDC funded construction projects because it has an obligation to ensure that PDC-funded projects offer equal opportunity in employment and that those who have been historically underutilized in the construction trades have access to jobs through training programs. This program does have specific requirements for participation.
For minority men and all women interested in construction careers, Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. offers a pre-apprenticeship program, Pathways to Success, to help prepare participants for trade careers and apprenticeship. Oregon Tradeswomen also produces the annual Women in Trades Career Fair where students and adult jobseekers can try out the tools of the trades and meet employers. Call 503-335-8200 x21 to learn more about these exciting opportunities.
The table below lists occupations available in the construction trades. (Direct links to unions and organizations representing these trades are footnoted and referenced below the table.)
